Samsung Galaxy III (S3) GT-I9300 JTAG Leaked Document. How to repair soft bricked Galaxy S3.

16 Oct , 2012 17 Comments Standard Post

After getting my new Samsung Galaxy III I’ve spent a lot of time reading around on the XDA forums and came across a thread that had an internal Samsung document that explains how to JTAG the Galaxy III (S3) which can come in handy if you find yourself in a situation where you soft bricked your phone.

There are plenty of instructions on XDA on how to attempt to repair a soft bricked phone, and you can find the links to those threads at the bottom of this post.

This is a copy from the thread as there is no reason in trying to reinvent the wheel.

Brief Description of the fix:

Copying the Bootloader file to an external SD Card, using a normal GT-I9300.

Inserting the external SD card into the bricked phone, and copying the bootloader file to the defective PBA.

After downloading the bootloader file to the defective phone, entering download mode with the phone, and downloading a Full S/W.(PIT, PDA, CSC, PHONE files)

Description of the files attached to this post:

(12-38)_GT-I9300_BRICKED.pdf.zip – This ZIP file Contains a PDF file that is the manual for the fix.

GT-I9300_Boot_Recovery.tar – This TAR file is the Bootloader that is copied to the external SD card.

Odin3v3.07.rar – The program specified in the manual that copies the bootloader onto the external SD card.

GT_I9300_unbrick_sdcard_head.zip – The BIN file used in Rebellos’s method below.

Requirements:

Odin3 v3.07.exe and Odin3.ini

GT-I9300_Boot_Recovery.tar

(12-38)_GT-I9300_BRICKED.pdf.zip

External SD Card (Memory size should be 2GB or bigger.)

One normal I9300 phone(normally booted on)

*Resistor has to be shorted very carefully, avoiding touching any other parts at all cost. If you short too many things together – possibility of frying some component of your I9300 rises drastically.

No one has yet to report trying this fix and it being successful, but I am confident that if preformed according to the instructions this fix has the potential of fixing almost any bricked GS3.

One Little Problem:

Scenario: I bricked my phone and I want to fix it as mentioned in this thread. So I go ahead and look at the requirements:

I download it from the attachments.

I download it from the attachments.

I download it from the attachments.

I don’t have one so I go buy one from a store for a little amount of money.

Ummmm… I have one but it can’t boot… Damn! I don’t have any friends that own one…. Damn! What should I do?!

Buy a new one so I can use it to fix the old one

Take my bricked phone to a store and pay at least 60$ for a fix.

Follow the instructions below.

Highly Recommended:

(Not Tested Yet)

Because of the ‘One Little Problem’ there are a few things you can do ahead of time so if you brick your phone you will be prepared:

If you don’t own an extra one, buy a 2GB external SD card.

Follow steps 1-12 in the manual using your own phone.

Take the external SD card out of your phone and put it away in a safe place to be used if needed.

Or follow Rebellos’s (Elite Recognized Developer) way:

Quote:

Here’s an experimental image: (Or attached to this post)

1) Insert SD card (Everything from it will be wiped!)

2) Bootup some linux machine (it can be rooted android phone aswell as its also linux machine )

3) Unpack archive

4) Perform dd if=GT_I9300_unbrick_sdcard_head.bin of=/dev/

On most of phones its /dev/block/mmcblk1 (MAKE SURE YOU DONT OVERWRITE YOUR INTERNAL PHONE MEMORY, ITS USUALLY “/dev/block/mmcblk0”)

On PCs it depends, its sometimes /dev/sdb

More info about dding sd card:

http://mikelev.in/2010/09/cloning-an-sd-card-on-linux/

You’re all ready and set, try to boot it up on dead I9300 and tell me how did it go! (Follow step 14 of Samsung’s guide)

Also, I don’t think Anyway JIG is necessary. Probably you only need to connect it to PC so it gets powered and you can use download mode.

Notice:

This method of fixing your bricked device is only meant to be used if all else fails: Full S/W package with Odin (PIT, BOOTLOADER, PDA, PHONE, CSC) Or USB Jig.

I have not done this before and have not tested this method, do this at your own risk!!!

My SamSung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 just SDS after charging in a week ago. Do you have good idea to fix it? I will really appreciate!!!

    • Myles

Haven’t had the SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome) on any G3’s as i’m always running the latest version of Android (supposed to prevent this from happening). I would recommend filling a complaint with Samsung as this is a known issue on their end.

  • SHELLEY MCMAHON

Ok, Good news, I did everything as you said, step by step on a new port that I had not seen on the back of my wireless desktop and BINGO! Now….I’m going to restart and try to load the custom rom you gave me through recovery mode…cross your fingers!

    • Myles

Excellent, glad everything worked out. The file I provided was for Odin that has root in the system image itself, you would need to download a ROM off XDA in a ZIP format to use and flash through recovery. I would recommend Liquid Smooth, Rootbox, or CyanogenMod. One thing you should do, is install TWRP (recovery) so you can create a backup through recovery. Here’s their website: http://www.teamw.in/

What methods have you tried in order to restore? Are you able to get into bootloader? Have you made sure to wipe data/cache factory reset, wipe dalvik cache and attempt to re-flash stock or custom rom?

Hi, sorry was at work. I have tried downloading two different versions of Odin 3.07, v1.87 I think it is. One got stuck at setting up connection and the second one was just a straight out failure. I am able to get to the bootloader. It will not restore from the mod I have there. I can also put it into download mode but it seems I cannot find what tar. file to put in Odin to restore it. I am currently downloading the Samsung updates. zip file. How do I make the zip file a .tar file? I have wiped the the wipe/data cache factory rest three times I have wiped the dalvik cache three times and nothing happens. I guess the disconnect is where I do I get a flash file for it (SGH T999) other than the Samsung Updates.zip file which does not work? Also I see that there is mention of resetting the binary counter to zero with Triangle away from the google play store but how if my phone is soft bricked? Current count on the phone is three (3)

        Thanks so much!

Are you on tmobile network? If so, follow instructions from this link:

          http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687

1.) Remove battery from phone, then put back in

2.) Press and hold all these together, volume down + home button + power button, this will take you to download mode, if it asks about continuing select yes

          3.) Download image ( latest for tmobile: http://d-h.st/Arn )

          4.) Open downloaded file using 7zip ( http://7zip.org )

5.) Extract to desktop or click and drag .tar.md5 and drop on desktop

6.) With phone in download mode (from step 2) plug into computer, and open Odin
          (download: http://samsung-updates.com/Odin307.zip )

7.) Select checkbox next to PDA, then click PDA button. When dialog opens, select the .tar.md5 file from the desktop. Give Odin a minute to verify, in bottom left it will say something like “md5 verified success”

8.) Click Start, and sit back and wait. This should flash your phone and after it completes you should have a stock phone with root

*** MAKE SURE TO NOT DISCONNECT PHONE AND COMPUTER HAS POWER ***

If your laptop dies or you unplug the cable while Odin is flashing this could cause your phone to no longer work.

Give that a try, if you can’t figure it out email me at myles *AT* hostt.net and i’ll be glad to help you as much as i can

Ok I installed a nightly and yep came up dirty. So I needed to restore it. Any help would be fantastic

So far I have tried 2 different computers, two different USB cables, all the different ports on each computer.

I have tried every Odin version and nothing seems to help. I have tried restoring the latest Samsung updates (back to stock) and a root ROM….nothing. Is there a way that I can reset the binary counter since I believe this to be the problem? i know I can download triangle away from the Google Play store but how do I put it in the phone that is soft bricked? I can put it in Recovery Mode or Download Mode but as you see fixing it with Odin has proved illusive.

The farthest I have gotten is this:

            In Odin 3.04
            Added!!
            Enter CS for MD5..
Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
            Please wait..
            root66_TMO_T999UVDMD5.tar.md5 is valid.
            Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
            Leave CS..
            Odin v.3 engine (ID:3)..
            File analysis..
            SetupConnection..
            Complete(Write) operation failed.
All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)

For the the Samsung stock I only get as far as “leave cs” then when I wipe the data/cache and reboot I get that dreadful Samsung logo and it stays that way for hours.

            Help???

            Thanks!

          • Myles

email me, myles AT hostt.net and i’ll walk you through a couple other things you can try. If you’re able to get to the samsung logo and it doesn’t go any further, reboot the phone into recovery, wipe cache and data, and then restart. I’ve had instances where it wouldn’t go past samsung logo until after doing a wipe and restarting. Using Triangle Away will only reset the trip counter temporarily which doesn’t make a difference unless you are returning the phone and don’t want them to know you have flashed custom ROMs. That doesn’t have anything to do with the phone not booting. Email me and i’ll help you out through email.
